Singapore Company Cracks Down on Anime Downloads

posted on 2007-06-07 05:16 EDT
Singapore licensor Odex threatens legal action against illegal downloads

According to a news report on the enforcement of copyright rules outside Japan, Singapore anime licensor Odex has started a campaign to eliminate illegal downloads of anime online. Beginning in May, Odex began sending cease and desist letters to the names and addresses of people whose download history had been exposed. The warning letters state that people who continue to share and download anime illegally will be reported to police. Odex is requesting that police search the homes of anyone who is reported.

The letters that Odex is sending are being sent almost exclusively to the people who download the files. This method is a strong contrast to the approach of Japanese authorities that are focusing on prosecuting the people who distribute anime.

Although Odex is the largest licensor and distributor of anime in Singapore, the company has seen a sharp drop in sales in recent years. This led to the company stopping distribution on all but the most popular titles. The company has cited internet file-sharing as a major cause of the drop in sales.

Review on Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle...

Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle Logo...
I Randomly got this anime from a friend, and i found myself desperate for some comedy anime. SOooo, I Tried Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle out & Realised that My Wants were Fulfilled. It Proved to be a GREAT Comedy Anime, With Some Really Great Serious Scenes Too. =)

Info on Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle from
Title : Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle
Japanese Title : 吉永さん家のガーゴイル
Other NameS : Gargoyle of Yoshinaga House, The Gargoyle of the Yoshinaga's
Total Episodes : 13
Genres : Comedy
Year Published : 2006
Studio : Studio Hibari, Trinet Entertainment

What Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle is about...
Yoshinaga Futaba won the first prize in a lottery. To be surprised, what she received was an unprecedented animal, gargoyle. At first sight, it looked like a stone statute, but it suddenly began to speak, and it said “I’m a gatekeeper of Yoshinaga”. Futaba went to the antique shop, Totensha, that had given the gargoyle for the first prize in the lottery. However the Owner didn't want it back & Futaba is Forced to Keep the Strange Gargoyle, who has some strange powers too.

How will Futaba's life turn out now with a stone statue that can talk in front of her gate?!

There are Many Characters in this anime, So I'll Just introduce the 3 main characters which are usually seen in almost every episode. x)

Gargoyle, the strange stone statue that Futaba won in the lottery. It seems to have some strange powers, and it remains at the front of the Yoshinaga's house, being a gatekeeper. Everyday Futaba Mistreats him by kicking him around and punishing him.etc. by the way, he talks too, to both humans and animals. =O

Yoshinaga Futaba...
Yoshinaga Futaba, the younger daughter of the 2 children in the Yoshinaga Household. She is quite tomboy-ish and very rude and violent. She wouldn't even hesitate to kick a stranger. She seems to regret participating in the lottery where she had won gargoyle, but she starts changing and developing as the arrival of Gargoyle, brought the arrival of other characters.

Yoshinaga Kazumi...
Yoshinaga Kazumi, the elder son of the 2 children in the Yoshinaga Household. Despite being a guy, he looks and sounds like a girl, and has even been asked out by guys in his school. He is constantly bullied by his sister about his "queer-ness". Nevertheless, he has responsible characteristics as he is a big brother anyway.

My Review on Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle...
Well, I wasn't really expecting much from this anime, because the title sounded a bit too fictional for me, & the characters were very child-like looking, which made me thought this might have been for children. But Of Course, no anime should be judged based on its animation alone, cause that's really stupid. =_="""

Anyway, I Was Surprised that Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle had More Value than i thought it had. =), Just like how the Gargoyle had more value than Futaba thought it had. But anyways, to start off with, the animation was pretty decent. Though there were times when the art looked really plain, but otherwise, it's usually pretty decent & smooth. =) The Character Designs were pretty good too. Though at first, when i saw all the characters almost looking like 8-10 year olds, i thought that the mother was Futaba's sister, but oh well. =_=. Only the age of the guys could be seen, other than that, the design of the gargoyle and the other characters were really Cool. =) Nothing Spectacular here but No Complaints either. x)

The Sounds were Pretty Good too. The OP & ED themes had Lively Happy Music, sung by the seiyuus themselves. =) & The Seiyuus Really Did a GREAt Job as the voices really fitted the characters very well. x) Gargoyle really sounded like a statue with honour and respect, Futaba, a High-pitched Brat, & her brother, Kazumi's feminine voice. xD. The Seiyuus did a Great Job, the sounds were enjoyable. No Complaints at all. =)

The Storyline is pretty original, i have to say. The characters though, similar personalities have been seen in various animes, but when that combination is put into this story, and with the comedy which was supported by those characters, that's what made Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle Quite a Unique Anime. =)

Though there wasn't any real plot of this anime, no real goal or anything to achieve, but those happy-go-lucky days where events and surprises just pop up and made their lives interesting, and it also brought in and introduced EVEN MORE Characters~! x) A Couple episodes were also based on the owner of the antique shop, Totensha's experiments, which always turned out to have weird outcomes. =P

But really, despite those random situations, there was Always Great Comedy there to Make me Laugh Out Loud when I saw Futaba kicking Gargoyle or Other Random People. x) & i expected there to only be comedy, but Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle surprised me with its serious scenes, and those scenes really developed Futaba's character and the other characters.

Okay, of course, Futaba's character in real life, would be one that's very hard to get along with, and i'm sure there would be some ppl who would hate her guts, but if you just look at this at an enjoyment perspective, it's really funny. so don't expect too much from this anime, but just let everything happen and you'll probably be surprised. =)

I Really enjoyed these 13 episodes, and seriously wanted more. T_T. I really felt as though Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle hasn't really ended, cause the last 2 episodes, which usually, the last few episode of an anime HAS to Have a sort of climax, right? However, Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle probably disappointed me here as the climax episodes weren't all that climax-ed and just weren't powerful enough. =(

Another bad point might be, because there was quite a number of characters there, and not enough time to develop all of them, that kind of tones Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle down a bit. =(

Those might be its bad points, but it's still forgivable, it wasn't all that bad either. I Really Enjoyed Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle & It Was Definitely Worth my Time. I Seriously Wanted MORE~! T_T

Though this anime probably wasn't meant to make you cry, but there were times and scenes in this anime which really touched me quite a lot and i was about to shed a tear. T_T... In my opinion, It has a LOT of Value despite how corny/childish its first impression might be. x)

It's Truly Worth a Watch~! =) So Yeah, If you happen to have nothing to watch, why not give Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle a try? =) It wouldn't hurt, right? (maybe Futaba's kicks would in real life) xD

My Rating...
One StarOne StarOne StarOne StarNo Star...

Animation: 8.5
Comment: Decent Animation. The Design for the Characters are Pretty well Done. Nothing Spectacular though, but well enough to support the interesting storyling of Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle. =)

Music/Sounds: 8.5
Comment: Bright Happy OP & ED Theme, it's like this anime was meant for kids. But who cares. The Seiyuus were Really Good too, & the voices fit the characters really well, =) especially Futaba's high-pitched voice. xD

Story: 9
Comment: An Interesting Storyline with Strange Things & Statues that have Lives. Involving Plants, Statues, Alchemy & Magical Powers into this anime. Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle has a Very Interesting Storyline, & a Great Balance of Comedy & Serious Scenes. Sad thing is, what toned this anime done was the fact that it was too short to be anything powerful & the climax (last episode) wasn't powerful enough. =( But It's Still GREAT~!

Characters: 9
Comment: There were Many Interesting Characters throughout the anime. Though not really the kinds that you can relate to, But Still, the characters had very good roles & they Added on to the Great Comedy. =) Without the support of the Characters, this anime wouldn't have any Comedy. & There was quite a bit of character development too, especially on Futaba. =) Too bad this anime wasn't longer, cause i'm sure there could be MORE character development in the other characters too.

Tear Factor:
One Tear...One Tear...One Tear...One Tear...
Comment: There were Scenes that Really Surprised me & Touched Me Quite a Lot. & I thought this was only meant to be a comedy anime. (O_O)

Comedy Factor:
One Laughter...One Laughter...One Laughter...One Laughter...Half Laughter...
Comment: xD I'm Sure EVERY Episode of this Anime will Make you Laugh Out Loud. =D It's Really Funny, & Futaba's Short-temperedness and Kicks Always Make Me Laugh. =D

Excitement/Suspense/Surprising Factor:
One Excitement...One Excitement...One Excitement...Half Excitement...
Comment: There were some Really Surprising Scenes & Twists. But nothing really that would made you Jump off your seat. =/

Meaningful Factor:
One Meaning...One Meaning...One Meaning...Half Meaning...
Comment: Well, it Did have some Meaningful Factors, especially during the scenes of Futaba's Character Development, about making friends and the sadness and losing them. A couple of lessons on respect and kindness to people too. =)

Overall, Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle was a Really Great Anime, Worth my Time Watching. =)

A Great Animation Style can be seen by the Prettiness of the Moon. x)

Gargoyle's Eye-beam. x)

Whoaaaa~! Nice Explosion. =O

Aren't you Glad that you don't have Futaba as your little sister. =_="""

So Yeah, If you happen to have nothing to watch, why not give Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle a try? =) It wouldn't hurt, right? (maybe Futaba's kicks would in real life) xD

Review on Inukami!

Inukami! Logo...
I randomly came across this anime & found out the seiyuu of the heroine was Yui Horie, very famous seiyuu who is the voice actress of Naru in Love Hina, Tohru in Fruits Basket, & MANY MANY OTHERS~! & SO~! Because of thaaat, & the fact that Yui Horie sang the OP theme which was a Nice Song, I Decided to Try this anime out. =)... Only to be extremely surprised that it wasn't what i expected... =_="""

Info on Inukami! from
Title : Inukami!
Japanese Title : いぬかみっ!
Total Episodes : 26
Genres : Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Love-Romance
Year Published : 2006
Studio : Seven Arcs

What Inukami! is About...
The Kawahira family have been a long line of Inukami-Tamers. "Inukami" literally meaning "Dog Gods", these Inukami are spirits which can have the appearance of a dog or a human, and teams up with an Inukami Tamer to fight against the evil spirits in the wold by forming a contract.

Kawahira Keita is the descendant of a long line of Inukami-tamers. However, he is thrown out by the family because he lacked ability. One day, an Inukami named Youko comes. At first glance, she looks graceful, obedient, and, above all, beautiful. Eventually, he forges a contract with her. However, she is a problematic Inukami that no one has been able to control, with the power of fire and ability to teleport.

Keita is a man of worldly passions who likes money and girls very much. On the other hand, Yoko is destructive and very jealous. With Youko's Abilities & Jealousy, the endless train of Keita's embarrassments never end.

Characters of Inukami!...
There are many Many MANY characters in this anime, & so, i shall only put the 2 main characters of this anime.

Kawahira Keita...
Kawahira Keita, a flirt and the inukami tamer of Youko. He lives a very interesting and hectic life together with Youko as they constantly exterminate evil spirits together. As they take on more missions, they meet more people and find out more about this very evil magician...

Youko, the inukami of Keita, she controls the powers of Fire & Teleportation. Using those Abilities to fight against the Evil spirits in the World, and punishing Keita everytime he's unfaithful to her...

My Review on the anime, Inukami!...
At first glance, One might think Inukami! is just another super hero anime, with the main characters who have super powers to save the world from bad guys. Well, this is true, but then once you try watching it, Inukami! will totally surprise you and bring you into the world of "Elephants", Nudity & Perversions...

To start off with, the animation was pretty decent for a 2006 anime. The animation was pretty good, The action scenes looked okay, & mmm, i have to say the character designs were just all right, but could have been done much better. Overall, the animation was just decent for a 2006 anime. However, i must say that the constant changing of the ending theme animation was a pretty good idea, to prevent boredom. =)

The Sounds were pretty good. With a Nice OP Theme, sung by the heroine of this series, Yui Horie, the nice Modern techno-ish music. x) ED Theme was a random song, but it had a nice melody... & mmm... The Seiyuus did a Pretty Good Job too. No Complaints here. =)

Mm. now about the story. At first, Many Many Many Characters were introduced in such a short period of time, & I started to wonder, if the extremely large number of characters will affect Inukami in a bad way or not. Well, Inukami! is a fantasy anime with super powers and Lots of Perverts & Ecchi ideas, I seriously don't know and DON"T WANT to enter into the mind of the Creator of Inukami!... =_="""... & Also, i think the creator has a very very weird fascination for Muscular Macho men in White Loincloths... =_="""

Inukami gives More Meaning to the proverb "Never Judge a Book by Its Cover". When i saw this anime, I thought it would be something like Bleach, using powers to fight against bad spirits. Who Knew this Anime had SO MANY OTHER Random STUFF ADDED?! Yes, Very Random & Every Episode Should Make you Laugh OutLoud if you enjoy that kind of comedy.

At the End of the anime, it gives a nice feeling that Inukami! ended in a nice happy way. & it was fun watching those Lighthearted scenes. There was considerably amount of character development in ALL the characters, though some might seem unnatural. I think this anime could be meant for kids, as it gave me the impression of "Power Rangers" or those kind of shows, the good guys, for some reason, no matter how injured/tired they were, they could still stand up and fight, even after being stabbed through their bodies?! Over & Over Again?! =O but then again, this isn't meant for kids with all those nudity and perverts. i think this anime should be MA- 15... =_=""""

Almost Everything in this anime is Super Unbelievable, But I guess it all adds up to the Superbly Unbelievable Wacky Aspect of Inukami!... =_="""...

For the Characters, there were many many characters involved, and there was a considerable amount of character development in all of them, so the balance is good. But well, all the characters in the anime were there to bring an extra laugh or two for this anime. & they did their jobs very well. =)

Overall, Inukami is an anime that One should NOT Take Seriously. Full of Wacky Comedy & Perverts, & Macho Men in Loincloths?! Every Episode will make you laugh out loud. But be warned. Don't expect too much of it. I have to say this was just a decent anime overall, since this anime had scenes where they tried to be sad and dramatic, but it didn't work. =_="""... and scenes of philosophy and the heroes lecturing etc.etc? but they just weren't powerful to work or change your life in anyway. but then again, well, i suppose they just added those scenes anyway just so Inukami will be complete in some way.

Either way, Inukami is a pretty Corny anime & Quite Predictable in Many Scenes, but still forgivable because of the Comedy & Light-heartedness with all the Characters in this Anime. =)

My Rating...
One StarOne StarOne StarHalf Star...No Star...

Animation: 8
Comment: Nice Animation. Though i didn't really fancy some of the character designs. But other than that, the animation is Just Nice for this anime. =)

Music/Sounds: 8.5
Comment: GreaT OP Theme. Nice ED Theme. Good Seiyuus. No Complaints. =)

Story: 7.5
Comment: Wacky Storyline which has a very wacky twist involving perverts and weird "desires". =_="""... The predictability of the outcomes and the "invincibility" of the characters, which was just too unbelievable brought the marks down.

Characters: 7
Comment: Character Designs were okay, didn't fancy it too much. A LOT of Characters, which resulted in not too many major character development in the characters, but just a considerable amount of development shared between all the characters. x)

Tear Factor:
One Tear...One Tear...
Comment: Inukami! tried to be sad and a little dramatic towards the end. But it didn't work out too well on me, cause the whole anime seemed pretty corny and too unnatural to be sad or dramatic in any way.

Comedy Factor:
One Laughter...One Laughter...One Laughter...One Laughter...
Comment: Lots of Random Wacky Comedy & Perverts & Lightheartedness. I think the Wacky & Corny Comedy is the only thing that Makes Inukami! an anime worth talking about...

Excitement/Suspense/Surprising Factor:
One Excitement...One Excitement...Half Excitement...
Comment: There were times when they tried to be Unpredictable, but failed quite miserably. & Sometimes when they were Quite Unpredictable, cause of the wacky storyline & the twists in it. But then again, overall, Inukami! was pretty predictable, and i'm sure almost everyone can predict the ending without needing to finish watching the last few episodes, which was the final battle scenes...

Meaningful Factor:
One Meaning...
Comment: Actually, I think i'm being too nice to even give Inukami! a one meaning point... =_="""... Is There Any Meaning in an Anime with Full of Deep Dark Desires & Perverts & Cosplayed Macho Men/ Muscular Men in Loincloths?! but then, there were times when Inukami! "tried" to emphasise some meaning... the characters can be considerably relatable and understandable. But other than that, Inukami! doesn't have any meaning with all that wackiness. xD

Overall, Inukami! seemed to have tried to be a Complete Anime with All that Wacky, Corny Comedy. Despite failing quite miserably in trying to be dramatic/unpredictable/meaningful.... Inukami! is forgivable because it has a Nice Themes, Good Seiyuus, Decent Animation & Really Wacky Ecchi Comedy that will Make you Laugh Out Loud Every Episode. =_="""

For the sake of it, I'll add some screenshots... x)
The Evil Spirit First Seen in the whole Anime...

OoO~! I Found a Trivia. What is that Statue that Keita is Looking At? A Character seen in the later episodes... x)

Youko Using her Fire Power... x)

It was worth watching Inukami!, i guess. But it's Definitely not one of the best animes out there. However, it's still worthy of a watch. =)

Till my Next Review,
